Day 4: Ruud Crashes Out, Gigante and Borges Shine
The headline act came on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, where two-time finalist Casper Ruud suffered a stunning defeat to Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Fresh from his Madrid title, Ruud looked drained and was overwhelmed as Borges dominated 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. This is a massive result for Borges and a huge blow to the men’s draw’s favorites.
On the big stage, Carlos Alcaraz showed glimpses of his trademark brilliance despite a hiccup in the second set. The young Spaniard powered through Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to move into the third round with confidence.
Another breakthrough story came from Italy, where qualifier Matteo Gigante upset 9th seed and 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets. The 22-year-old lefty held his nerve down the stretch to claim a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory and will face Ben Shelton next—a showdown to watch.
The resilience of American Tommy Paul was on full display as he rallied from two sets down against Marton Fucsovics. Paul fought back fiercely, breaking serve at the crucial moment and eventually winning 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
Holger Rune wrapped up the day on Chatrier with a composed straight-sets win over Emilio Nava, setting up a match with Quentin Halys.
Team USA continues to make noise with Frances Tiafoe cruising past Pablo Carreño Busta, and Sebastian Korda defeating Jenson Brooksby to set up an all-American clash in Round 3.

Day 6: Musetti, Shelton, and Rune Power Into Second Week
Day 6 at Roland Garros delivered another jam-packed slate of high drama, resilience, and rising stars pushing deeper into the draw. With the first men’s last-16 spots up for grabs, several familiar names and some fresh faces booked their places in week two.
Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti was the first to punch his ticket, recovering from a slow start to defeat Argentina’s Mariano Navone in four sets. The 8th seed, who continues to look more at home on clay, finished strong in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win and will now face Holger Rune in the fourth round.
Rune, playing under the lights on Chatrier, broke French hearts with a gutsy comeback against Quentin Halys. The Frenchman was two points from victory late in the fourth set, but Rune wrestled back control and eventually prevailed 6-3 in the decider. Their looming clash is shaping up as one of the standout fourth-round ties.
On Court 14, Aussie Alexei Popyrin continued his impressive run in Paris, reaching the last 16 for the first time with a dramatic straight-sets win over Nuno Borges. The second set alone featured a tense 13-11 tiebreak before Popyrin wrapped it up 6-4, 7-6(11), 7-6(5). He’ll meet Tommy Paul, who survived yet another five-set test, this time against 15th seed Karen Khachanov, pulling through 6-3 in the fifth.
Germany’s Daniel Altmaier is back in the fourth round at Roland Garros after seeing off young Serb Hamad Medjedovic. Altmaier, who stunned Taylor Fritz earlier in the tournament, remains one of the more compelling underdog stories of the week.
Ben Shelton made light work of Matteo Gigante, beating the Italian qualifier 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 with clinical hitting. He joins fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the second week after Tiafoe earned his first-ever fourth-round spot in Paris by beating Seb Korda in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz survived a spirited effort from Damir Dzumhur to win in four slightly edgy sets, 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while news broke late in the day that French No.1 Arthur Fils has withdrawn due to injury—dampening spirits at home.
One name to watch on Saturday: 21-year-old Henrique Rocha, who’s turned heads with his fighting spirit through qualifying and back-to-back five-set wins. His next test? Alexander Bublik.
