Newcastle United vs Everton: Premier League Preview

Champions League qualification is the prize on offer for Newcastle United as they welcome Everton to St James’ Park on the final day of a tightly contested Premier League season. For Eddie Howe’s side, the equation is straightforward: win, and a place in Europe’s elite competition is secured. Anything less, and the door opens for Chelsea, Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa to pounce.

Last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat at Arsenal marked only Newcastle’s second loss in their last 10 league matches, but it has left them with work to do on the final day. The Magpies are level on points with their top-five rivals, and with Chelsea and Forest meeting each other and Aston Villa visiting Manchester United, dropped points at home could prove costly.

Fortunately for Howe, his side have turned St James’ into a fortress of late, winning six straight league games in front of their own fans. Newcastle also boast a strong record on the final day, winning eight of their last 10 closing fixtures, though they will recall the sting of 2012, when a final-day defeat to Everton saw their own top-four hopes dashed.

Everton’s current motivation differs. Sean Dyche’s men are locked in 13th regardless of Sunday’s outcome, but they have the chance to end the campaign on a high with three straight wins for the first time since the 1980s. After a rousing comeback at Fulham and a controlled 2-0 victory over Southampton at Goodison Park, the Toffees arrive in good form but with little at stake.

Still, the Merseyside club have a history of spoiling Newcastle’s party. They held the Magpies to a 1-1 draw in their most recent visit to St James’ Park, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin converting a late penalty. In October’s reverse fixture, Jordan Pickford denied ex-Everton winger Anthony Gordon from the spot in a 0-0 draw. Pickford, a lifelong Sunderland supporter, is expected to start and could prove pivotal once again.

In team news, Newcastle are hopeful that Alexander Isak will return after sitting out last weekend due to muscle stiffness. If not, Callum Wilson – who has scored eight goals in 10 games against Everton – is poised to lead the line. Kieran Trippier is racing to be fit from a calf issue, but Lewis Hall, Joelinton and Matt Targett remain sidelined.

For Everton, defensive issues continue to mount. With Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski ruled out through hamstring injuries, Michael Keane is expected to start again. Seamus Coleman, who limped off early against Southampton, is also unavailable, and there is a possibility he has played his final professional match. Loan pair Jesper Lindstrom and Orel Mangala also miss out.

With European stakes on the line for Newcastle and Everton seeking a positive close to an eventful season, the stage is set for a compelling clash on Tyneside.
